| Introduction
|
The art of stained
glass flourished in the century with the advent of the Roman architecture and the
construction of big cathedrals.
In Italy the Art of glass making achieved great results above all in Umbria
and Toscany: the most striking examples can be found in the cathedral of Orvieto
ant in the churches of Santa Croce e Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
Among the Italian artists that produced stained glass windows in the XII and XVI century
there were Duccio di Buoninsegna and Lorenzo Ghibeti, followed later by Perugino,
Donatello, Paolo Uccello e Andrea del Castagno. To
the set of colours used by European artists the hues of pureple, green
dark and yellow were added. The elegant style of late Trecento was also appreciated in the
Renaissance when the northeuropean style imposed a great attention on realistic details.
Although stained glass had been introduced also in the houses-where they represented
mostly the family coat of arms-the production of stained glass windows found its most
effective expression in the sacred art.
The main Italian centers of this development were Bologna in the church
of San Petronio, Venice where Antonio Vivarini and Girolamo Mocetto worked at the
rose-windows of the church Santissimi Giovanni e Paolo and Milan where
the particular structure of the Cathedral exhibited the painted glasses realized by
Michelino da Besozzo e Nicoḷ da Venezia. |
